Q: What's an original wine crate (OWC), wine box and wine panel?

A: Original wine crates and wine boxes are made by wineries, and have been used to store and protect the winery's high-value bottles. The logo of the winery is engraved or embossed on them. Original wine crates can't be personalized.

Wine panels are the engraved or embossed side of the wine crate or box.

Q: What are original wooden wine crates and boxes used for?

  • To help maintain provenance for wine collections
  • To increase profit yield of wine collection at auction. Investors match the OWC to the wine they're selling
  • Storing most wine bottles to keep them in perfect condition
  • Wine cellar decoration accents
  • Unique shelving for kitchens and bathrooms
  • Bookcases and square foot gardens
  • Fun woodworking projects such as: Creating benches, pet beds or feeders, magazine racks, storage-on-wheels with casters, large Limoges or Shadow boxes, spice racks and much more.

Q: Do all wine bottles fit in an original wine crate or box?

A: Unfortunately not. Most large wine crates are from Bordeaux, and all Bordeaux bottles are generally the same height and thickness. Napa, Riesling and Champagne bottles are often taller or thicker than Bordeaux bottles, so they most likely will not fit perfectly. It really does depend on the winery though, so give us a call if you have any questions on that

Q: Does vinyl or records fit in an original wine crate or box?

A: Vinyl and records are slightly too large for medium or large wine crates unfortunately. We do have a crate type that does fit them, which is called a 6 bottle magnum crate. It is approx. 15" L X 15" W X 8" H. These are rare crates because most vineyards don't make them. Send us an e-mail or call us if you'd like to check our current stock on those.

Q: What are the weights and special details of wine crates?

Small wine crate: Holds 1 wine bottle and is approx. 2 pounds empty

Medium wine box: Holds 6 wine bottles and is approx. 5 pounds empty

Large wine crate: Holds 12 wine bottles and is approx. 8 pounds empty

The wine crate styles above are designed to stack wine bottles inside them. The medium stacks 3 on top of 3, and the large stacks 6 on top of 6.

Q: What are original wine panels used for?

  • Wine-themed wall, ceiling or floor coverings similar to tiles
  • Table-top decoration for wine tasting tables
  • Wine room wall accents
  • Cabinet and shelf door covers
  • Bar fronts
  • Kitchen or bathroom wainscot
  • Restaurant or store wall sectionals or trims
  • Wine rack markers to match the wine panel to the specific bottles on your wine rack

Q: What's the difference between Collectors and Classic wine panels?

A: Collectors panels are all approx. the same size and thickness. The majority have historic and  exquisite designs/artwork on them. They're our premium selection because they are hand-sanded twice with two different grits to a smooth texture and feel. This makes them ready for any kind of finish the moment you pull them out of the shipping box.

Classic panels vary somewhat in size and thickness. Most have excellent designs and artwork on them, but some also have vineyard lettering of the winery only. We do take excellent care of our Classic selection of panels, but they aren't sanded like the Collectors. We generally suggest the Classics to cover very large areas at a cost effective price (100 sq. feet or more)

Q: How heavy are wine crate panels?

A: About a 1/2 pound each

Q: What's a custom wine box or case?

A: Custom wine boxes, cases and panels are made just for you. Your logo, monogram or design is engraved on them. All of our personalized custom pieces are crafted in our Albany NY workshop, and beautifully made by hand. Nothing is outsourced and we're not a factory. Our custom wine boxes and cases are built in the traditional way to last for generations.

Q: What wood type does Winepine craft with for personalized custom work?

A: Artisan-class pine wood that's been specially harvested for engraving. Our unfinished lumber comes from eco-friendly, sustainable and local land sources that are re-seeded once a tree has been cut down. This means that no forests experience stress as a result of the wood we use, and we have a never-ending supply in the years to come.

Q: What types of payment methods are accepted?

A: Paypal and all major credit cards. We do accept checks in some cases for established vendors

Q: What method(s) of shipping do you use?

A: FedEx Ground. Express on request. FedEx Tracking is automatically sent to your e-mail address the day the order ships out.

Q: What is your turn-around time?

A: It depends a lot on the season, and the amount of crates ordered. Christmas time is the busiest part of the year. We usually are able to ship out originals within 4-5 business days. As far as custom crates, one piece will take us about the same time. Please contact us for turn-around times on larger quantities.

Q: How long do I have to wait to get a response back?

A: We are very good about responding back within 2-4 hours from the time we receive the e-mail (this is the quickest way to contact us). If you would like to give us a call, check the contact us page for details or call 914-565-0134.
